The Man in the Arena
Artist
Richard Wandell
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Hardboard
Description
2013. This was inspired by sculpture, poem and quote. The sculpture is from ancient Rome called Boxer Resting; the poem is anonymous except for the fact that JFK kept it in his wallet.
Bullfight critics ranked in rows,
crowd the enormous plaza full.
But only one is there who knows,
and he's the man who fights the bull.
And the quote? It begins...It's not the critic that counts, not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood...(Theodore Roosevelt)
You'll have to look up the rest, it will inspire you too.
I just wish I knew what he was thinking; what happened; what's going to happen. But does it matter? He's in the arena.
