That is so cool, Susan. I sent the painting to my friend Paul, the grandson of the original owner. He mentioned the sign above the doorway was porcelain. It wouldn't surprise me if they still had it somewhere. I bet that's worth a pretty penny, Customer service is still king there, Paul is a little bummed out that there are no more Warholak's that will keep the doors open when he calls it quits. That is going to be a sad day.

When I lived in Kentucky and went to a University there, for fun I would drive around the countryside. On those drives I discovered old gas stations, signs and ancient falling down buildings. I did some sketches of them which I still have today. Yes, and people were friendly and ready to talk about the " good old -olden times" too. This painting brings back happy memories .fav

Glad to be the first commenting on this great work. The repletion of the blue really pops against the building. So much character in this work Richard. Another fine one. F/L.

Richard Wandell replied:

Thank you, Randy. This painting is important to me, I want it to feel like you could be there and strike up a conversation while getting your car worked on.

Artist's Description

This gem of a place has been serving the Detroit area since 1931. Most businesses don't survive beyond the original owner. However, Warholak Tires is owned and operated by two brothers, grandchildren of the grandfather that passed it on to their father, and he to them.
This is how the business looked in the 1930's. It looks a lot different today, but you would be hard pressed to find a better bang for your buck if you walked into a million other places to do business. I suppose that is why it's still standing strong.

About Richard Wandell

Richard Wandell

My husband, the artist Richard Wandell, passed away on December 5, 2022. Following is his biography. “A painting is never really finished, you just stop painting.” Richard Wandell was awed by art and its magical beauty for a long time and one day, after many years of lying dormant, he began to paint. It was 1994 and he had waited long enough. Now was the time he had to become what he should have been all along; he had to paint. Richard was completely self taught. He made an attempt to paint way back in 1978 but was so terrible he laid the brushes down. Then again in 1986 but oil paints were not for him. Then in 1994 he dipped his brush into acrylic paints and never looked back. When Richard Wandell painted he was inspired...
