I made three trips to Miller Bluff and probably spent 10 hours up there with my 3' x 4' piece of hardboard, paints, brushes, water and cigars. I used an old two wheeler to haul everything through the rocky trail to the perch with a view. Grandad's Bluff is directly south and the view is stupendous. I started this in the spring of 2011 and finished in the fall. Most of the work was done in my studio but the fun was being on that bluff and having hikers (once in a while) surprise me on the trail you see as I painted. I even posed for a couple of photos of the unfinished work...very cool and so Monet of me. I wanted to paint it not as it looks today but before civilization came. I couldn't have done it without the cigars, the mosquitoes would have carried me away.
My husband, the artist Richard Wandell, passed away on December 5, 2022. Following is his biography. “A painting is never really finished, you just stop painting.” Richard Wandell was awed by art and its magical beauty for a long time and one day, after many years of lying dormant, he began to paint. It was 1994 and he had waited long enough. Now was the time he had to become what he should have been all along; he had to paint. Richard was completely self taught. He made an attempt to paint way back in 1978 but was so terrible he laid the brushes down. Then again in 1986 but oil paints were not for him. Then in 1994 he dipped his brush into acrylic paints and never looked back. When Richard Wandell painted he was inspired...
