About Richard Wandell
A painting is never really finished, you just stop painting.
I begin with a blank piece of white. I know not what it will become, for rarely does it look like what I first envisioned. I start one place and end up somewhere else. A journey takes place within my mind; creating something that was not. I paint over and over, correcting misplaced paint like I could push back time. In the end, nothing is exactly as I originally envisioned. There are still misplaced strokes that present me with different outcomes. I have learned to welcome and embrace veering off the path of my original vision. I have become determined to produce a finished piece of art that satisfies my original intentions. Along the way, each blank piece of white becomes something that it was not…it becomes what is.
Art is about discovery. It is the process of getting lost within the canvas that allows the freedom to bend the rules, whatever they may be. Completely self taught, I appreciate the evolution of my art and feel that growth as an artist never ends. I paint what appeals to my inner instinct and trust that my instinct will lead to a better place, far from where I began. Isn't it funny how art imitates life?
